Sunset Wizard Coleus - Care Sheet
Overview
Sunset Wizard Coleus, usually sold as Wizard® Sunset, brings warm bronze and sunset-toned foliage to shaded containers, summer borders and bright indoor spaces. This compact selection typically reaches 30–36 cm / 12–14 inches tall and 25–30 cm / 10–12 inches wide. Its upright, mounded shape makes it easy to tuck into mixed planters.
The accepted scientific name is Coleus scutellarioides; labels may use the synonyms Solenostemon scutellarioides or Plectranthus scutellarioides. It is a tender perennial commonly grown as a seasonal annual. Beginner-friendly care centres on warmth, filtered light and consistently moist, freely draining soil.

Light
Choose a bright window with filtered light indoors. Outdoors, give Wizard Sunset partial shade or bright shade, with gentle morning sun if available. The breeder lists shade and partial sun for this selection, so avoid assuming it shares the full-sun tolerance of newer sun-loving coleus. Introduce stronger light gradually. Deep shade can encourage stretched stems; harsh afternoon sun can cause wilting or scorched leaves.
Water
Keep the root zone lightly moist without leaving it saturated. Check containers frequently and water when the surface begins to dry, before the entire root ball dries out. Water thoroughly, allow excess to drain and empty the saucer. Outdoor pots may need daily checks in hot weather; indoor plants usually dry more slowly. Adjust to the soil rather than a fixed schedule.
Humidity
Moderate household humidity is a sensible starting point; there is no verified cultivar-specific humidity percentage to chase. Keep plants away from heating vents and drying draughts. If indoor air is very dry, a room humidifier can help. Maintain gentle airflow and avoid relying on frequent misting, which provides little lasting humidity and leaves foliage wet.
Temperature
A practical indoor target is 18–27°C / 65–80°F, rather than a strict cultivar requirement. Coleus needs warmth and cannot tolerate frost. Wait until outdoor conditions are settled and soil is above approximately 16°C / 60°F before planting. Bring treasured plants inside before nights become chilly; around 10–12°C / 50–54°F is a conservative trigger for moving them under cover.
Soil & Potting
Use a quality peat-free potting mix that retains moisture while draining readily. A loam-based mix works well; add some perlite if your mix stays dense and wet. Always choose a pot with drainage holes. In borders, incorporate compost to improve organic matter and soil structure. Avoid waterlogged sites, and keep the plant at its original planting depth.
Feeding
During active spring and summer growth, apply a balanced general-purpose fertilizer about monthly, following its label. For indoor pots, a dilute liquid feed is a cautious starting point. Account for fertilizer already included in fresh compost and avoid stacking several products. Reduce or pause feeding when winter light and growth decline. Never fertilize a severely dry or stressed plant.
Repotting
Check overwintered plants each spring. Repot when roots crowd the container, emerge through drainage holes or make the compost dry unusually quickly. Move up one pot size, roughly 2–5 cm / 1–2 inches wider, using fresh mix. Annual repotting often suits plants kept long-term, although a vigorous young plant may need attention sooner. Very large pots can stay wet too long.
Propagation
Take a healthy, non-flowering stem cutting about 10–15 cm / 4–6 inches long. Remove the lower leaves and place the exposed nodes in water or moist propagation compost. Keep warm in bright indirect light. Water-rooted cuttings commonly develop roots in two to three weeks; pot them up once roots have formed and keep the mix gently moist.
For seed, choose a labelled Wizard Sunset packet. Surface-sow because coleus seed needs light, and maintain approximately 20–25°C / 68–77°F. Keep moist, then ventilate after germination. Saved seed may vary; cuttings preserve the parent’s foliage characteristics.
Common Problems
Drooping leaves
Check the compost first. Water a dry root ball thoroughly. If it is already wet, check drainage and avoid adding more water. Move heat-stressed plants into afternoon shade.
Leggy growth or weaker colour
Increase filtered light gradually and pinch growing tips just above a leaf pair to encourage branching. Colour naturally changes with growing conditions.
Yellow leaves and soft stems
Persistent wetness can damage roots. Empty saucers, check drainage and let the surface begin drying between waterings. Remove decayed tissue and take healthy cuttings if deterioration continues.
Sticky leaves or visible insects
Inspect leaf undersides for whitefly, mealybugs and scale. Isolate affected plants, remove small infestations and use a suitable labelled treatment if needed, testing a small area first.
Toxicity & Pet Safety
Keep Sunset Wizard Coleus away from pets. Veterinary guidance lists Coleus scutellarioides as poisonous, with ingestion associated with vomiting and diarrhoea. Common-name lists can confuse ornamental coleus with Indian borage, Coleus amboinicus; information about one species should not automatically be applied to every coleus. Contact your veterinarian promptly if a pet eats this plant. Foliage can also irritate sensitive human skin.
Seasonal Care
In spring, refresh crowded pots and introduce outdoor conditions gradually. Through summer, check moisture frequently and remove emerging flower spikes if foliage is your priority. Before autumn cold arrives, bring plants indoors or take cuttings. In winter, provide the brightest suitable position, water less frequently as growth slows and keep leaves away from cold window glass.
Quick Tips
- Give this selection afternoon shade.
- Check soil before reaching for the watering can.
- Always empty standing water from saucers.
- Pinch stem tips for a fuller plant.
- Remove flower spikes to favour foliage growth.
- Take backup cuttings before autumn cold.
- Keep plants and fallen leaves beyond pets’ reach.
