Wizard Jade Coleus - Care Sheet

Coleus scutellarioides, Wizard Jade selection
Updated 2026-10-06 21:28 UTC

Overview

Wizard Jade Coleus brings a fresh green-and-cream palette to windowsills, sheltered patios and summer containers. Its patterned, toothed leaves provide the main attraction, while its compact, branching habit makes it easy to enjoy in smaller spaces. Expect roughly 30–36 cm / 12–14 inches in height under good growing conditions.

The accepted scientific name is Coleus scutellarioides; labels may still use Solenostemon scutellarioides or Plectranthus scutellarioides. Wizard Jade is a cultivated selection of this tropical species. It is beginner-friendly with regular watering, warmth and protection from strong afternoon sunshine. Although often sold as an annual, it can be kept indoors beyond summer.

Light

Indoors, choose a bright window with filtered light. Outdoors, partial shade or dappled light suits Wizard Jade; the breeder lists shade and partial sun. Gentle morning sunshine may be suitable after gradual acclimation, but protect the pale foliage from hot afternoon sun. Deep shade can produce stretched stems and sparse growth. Move the plant gradually when changing its position.

Water

Check the soil rather than following a fixed calendar. When the upper 2–3 cm / 1 inch feels dry, water thoroughly until excess drains out, then empty the saucer. Avoid letting the whole root ball become dry. Outdoor containers may need daily checks in warm weather; indoor plants usually dry more slowly. Water at soil level to keep foliage dry.

Humidity

Moderate room humidity is a sensible starting point; a precise Wizard Jade humidity requirement is not established in the consulted horticultural guidance. Keep it away from radiators and hot air vents. If the room is persistently dry, a humidifier may help. Maintain gentle airflow and avoid repeated misting, which leaves foliage wet without providing lasting humidity.

Temperature

Aim for a comfortable, warm environment around 18–27°C / 65–81°F. This is a practical growing range rather than a cultivar-specific limit. Coleus is very cold-sensitive: avoid chilly drafts and contact with cold window glass. Move outdoor plants inside before cold autumn nights, and plant out only after frost risk has passed and the soil has warmed.

Soil & Potting

Use a quality peat-free potting compost that holds moisture while draining freely; a loam-based mix is suitable. Add some perlite if your mix stays overly wet. Choose a pot with drainage holes and keep the stem base at its existing depth. In garden beds, incorporate organic matter and avoid places where rainwater pools. Do not bury the crown.

Feeding

During active spring and summer growth, apply a general-purpose liquid fertilizer approximately monthly, following its container-plant directions. Start cautiously with young plants and account for fertilizer already included in fresh compost. Avoid feeding dry roots. Reduce or pause feeding when winter light limits growth; extra fertilizer cannot compensate for a dim position.

Repotting

Check roots each spring. Repot if they circle densely, emerge through drainage holes, or the plant dries unusually quickly despite thorough watering. Move into a container about 2–5 cm / 1–2 inches wider, using fresh compost. Fast-growing young plants may need attention sooner. Avoid a much larger pot, which can leave excess damp soil around a small root system.

Propagation

Stem cuttings are the most dependable way to preserve your plant’s appearance. Take a healthy, non-flowering tip about 10–15 cm / 4–6 inches long, cut below a leaf node, and remove the lower leaves. Root it in water with leaves above the surface, or in lightly moist potting mix. Keep it warm in bright indirect light; rooting often takes two to three weeks.

For seed growing, buy seed specifically labelled Wizard Jade. Surface-sow on moist seed compost, leaving seeds exposed to light, and maintain approximately 20–25°C / 68–77°F. Home-collected seed may produce different foliage.

Common Problems

Wilting

Feel the soil first. A dry root ball needs thorough watering. If the compost is wet, check drainage and roots before adding more water. Temporary midday drooping outdoors may indicate excessive heat or sun.

Yellow leaves or soft stems

Persistent wetness can damage roots and encourage rot. Empty standing water, let the surface dry between waterings and inspect for soft, brown roots. Take healthy cuttings if the stem base is deteriorating.

Leggy growth

Increase filtered light and pinch shoot tips just above a leaf pair to encourage branching. Remove emerging flower spikes if your priority is dense foliage.

Bleached or crispy leaves

Strong sunshine, drought or fertilizer buildup may be responsible. Provide afternoon shade, review watering and reduce feeding. Existing damaged patches will not turn green again.

Indoor pests

Check leaf undersides for aphids, whiteflies and spider mites. Isolate affected plants and rinse pests away gently. If needed, use a labelled insecticidal soap, testing a small area first and following application instructions.

Toxicity & Pet Safety

Keep Wizard Jade away from pets and discourage chewing. The ASPCA’s entry called “Coleus” identifies a different species, Indian borage, rather than Coleus scutellarioides; it does not establish Wizard Jade’s specific toxicity. Pet safety therefore remains uncertain from these sources, and related species should not be treated as interchangeable. Ornamental coleus can also cause skin irritation in sensitive people. Contact your veterinarian if a pet eats it, providing the plant’s name and a photograph.

Seasonal Care

In spring, refresh compost as needed and resume feeding when growth strengthens. Acclimate plants gradually before summer outdoor placement. Check container moisture frequently during hot spells. In autumn, bring plants or healthy cuttings indoors before cold weather. Through winter, provide the brightest suitable position, water less frequently as growth slows, and inspect regularly for pests.
